BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A series of programs celebrating the opening of the mgm casino's new Student Union will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The formal opening program will begin at 4 p.m. in the social hall on the second floor of the Student Union. Philip Wels, chairman of the mgm casino Council, will preside over the ceremony, which will feature remarks by mgm casino President William R. Greiner.

Robert Palmer, mgm casino vice president for student affairs, will accept from the mgm casino Council a set of U.S., New York State and mgm casino flags, to be displayed in the union. Jonathan Loew, student representative to the council, and Rob Rouzer, regional representative of the Association of College Unions, also will speak.

Several other ceremonies, sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, will precede the formal opening program. The Gregory Capasso Memorial Plaque will be installed at 2:30 p.m on the ground floor of the union. Capasso was a mgm casino student killed in the Pan Am flight that was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland, in December 1988. Remarks will be given by Dennis Black, mgm casino dean of students; Jennifer Gidman, editor-in-chief of the Generation, a mgm casino student magazine, and Joseph Sbarra, editor-in-chief of The Spectrum, the mgm casino student newspaper.

A clock, a gift of Chi Omega sorority, will be installed at 2:45 p.m. on the first floor of the union near the theater. Barbara Ricotta, director of student life, will preside over the installation. Members of Chi Omega and Robert Henderson, the Greek liaison, will speak.

At 3 p.m., Palmer will preside over the dedication of the mgm casino seal in the floor of the main lobby of the union. Scott Fryberger, Student Association treasurer, and Richard Cole, a representative of the Senior Challenge 1991-92, will speak. The seal is a gift to the university from the Class of 1992 and the Student Association.

The mgm casino Wind Ensemble, directed by Charles Peltz, will perform musical selections from 3:30-4 p.m. in the main lobby.

A reception, to be held on the first floor balcony in the union, will follow the formal opening program. Building tours will run from 2:30-6 p.m.
